Observe safely before requesting service
Record the exact model, serial number, timestamp, fault code and symptoms using safe access to the normal display or app. Note weather, grid interruptions and recent work. Do not open enclosures, climb onto a roof, repeatedly reset a fault or operate unfamiliar isolators. Keep away from smoke, heat, damaged cables or battery swelling; contact emergency services on 112 for immediate danger.
Identify the hardware and event context
Record the full SMA model designation, serial number, firmware, commissioning date and exact event text. Sunny Boy, hybrid and storage products do not share one universal diagnostic sequence. Distinguish a failed local display from generation, network access and metering, using the normal monitoring interface before qualified testing.
Diagnose the installation, not a brand stereotype
A qualified professional should distinguish supply faults, PV-string conditions, communications, siting, settings, firmware and hardware using the exact manufacturer's diagnostic procedure. A fault code or an online complaint does not establish a product-wide defect or failure rate. Record tests and the basis for a proposed repair before ordering replacement parts.
Check communications and accessories
Use the exact manual to establish whether an interface is built in or requires an accessory, which network services are supported and who controls the account. Do not assume a Speedwire module, replacement display or monitoring licence is included. Ask for an itemised diagnosis and the approved part number before authorising work.
Protect configuration and remote access
Identify the account owner, installer permissions, network requirements and update process for the installed version. Back up approved settings before authorised changes. Do not bypass protective limits or load firmware from an unofficial source. Loss of an app connection is not necessarily loss of generation; confirm device status and measurements separately.
Establish warranty dates and responsibility
Compare the serial-number record, regional warranty version, sale and commissioning evidence, and any registration or extension confirmation. Manufacturing date and installation date are not interchangeable evidence. Confirm the claim channel and coverage for diagnostics, access, removal, shipping, labour and recommissioning rather than assigning a universal duration or outcome.
Separate product and workmanship terms
Obtain the exact regional product warranty and the contractor's written workmanship terms. Identify labour, travel, access, transport, registration, exclusions and claim responsibilities. Performance warranties are not promises about the household bill, and an insurance policy does not guarantee project completion. Agree milestones and changes in writing.
Keep a commissioning record
Agree the inspections, measurements, settings and documents applicable to the installation. Retain equipment identification, as-built diagrams, protection details, test results, operating instructions and handover records. Monitoring access is useful, but an app displaying generation is not proof of electrical safety, completed registration or an active export-compensation contract.
