Rewiring a Spanish villa or apartment is disruptive by nature. Cables get chased into walls, fuse boards come out, the whole electrical infrastructure of a home gets rethought. Everything that makes a green upgrade complicated — routing cables, sizing the consumer unit, checking the earthing — is already being done.
Why old wiring is a bigger risk than most expats realise
Many homes on the Costa del Sol were built in the 1970s, 80s and 90s under regulations that are now decades out of date. The original wiring was never designed to handle the loads of modern living: multiple air conditioning units, induction hobs, electric ovens, fast phone chargers, and increasingly, heat pumps and car chargers. Aluminium wiring — common in Spanish builds of that era — corrodes and expands in ways that copper does not, creating resistance that can cause overheating at connections.

In the worst cases, the Spanish grid company Endesa arrives to disconnect the property after a fault. A full rewire replaces all of this with modern copper cabling rated to current ITC-BT standards, a new ICP-protected fuse board, and proper RCD protection on every circuit.

When that circuit is planned as part of a rewire, it's a morning's extra work. As a standalone job on a finished home, it means trunking cables across plastered walls or hunting for routes through already-closed voids.
Combined with solar, the calculation becomes compelling. A home that generates its own electricity and charges an EV from the roof effectively eliminates the two largest ongoing energy costs in most households — grid electricity and petrol.
