The Challenge

This Sotogrande villa — 520m² on a 3,200m² plot with equestrian facilities — had an electricity bill of €1,200 per month. Three-phase loads including horse stable environmental controls, a 120,000-litre pool, outdoor lighting across the estate grounds, and a full smart home system meant consumption exceeded 55,000 kWh annually. Previous solar quotes had been for systems under 20kW — the client rightly rejected these as insufficient, having calculated they would still face €700+ monthly bills. The challenge was to design a genuinely large-scale residential solar installation in Sotogrande that would match the property's actual consumption profile and achieve 80%+ energy independence.

The Solution

15kW premium solar installation with 20kWh battery backup for luxury beachfront villa. Complete energy independence during daytime hours.

Technical Specifications

  • 27 x 550W JA Solar monocrystalline panels
  • DEYE SUN-15K-SG04LP3-EU hybrid inverter
  • 20kWh Pylontech US5000 LiFePO4 battery bank
  • Smart energy management system
  • Premium mounting system with hurricane brackets

Our Installation Process

1

3-Phase Load Analysis & Annual Consumption Profiling

We analysed 24 months of Endesa billing and installed temporary phase-by-phase data loggers to understand the consumption profile by time of day and season. The analysis revealed that 35% of consumption occurred during 09:00–15:00 (ideal solar hours), with a base load of 3.5kW continuous overnight. The stable environmental controls and pool circulation were identified as prime candidates for solar-hour scheduling.

2

25kW System Design & Roof Mapping

The villa's main roof was mapped using drone photogrammetry to create an accurate 3D model for shading analysis and panel layout. A 25.5kW system (60 × 425W half-cell monocrystalline panels) was distributed across 3 roof pitches to avoid shading conflicts and maximise generation across all daylight hours. String sizing was designed to avoid MPPT clipping at peak summer irradiance.

3

20kWh Battery Storage & Inverter Configuration

Two 10kWh LiFePO4 battery modules were specified for 20kWh total storage — sized to cover the villa's 3.5kW overnight base load for 5+ hours and provide blackout protection for the security, stable, and pool systems. The three-phase hybrid inverter was configured for priority self-consumption, with surplus export to Endesa grid and CAU registration completed for net compensation.

4

Endesa CAU Notification, Boletín Eléctrico & Monitoring Setup

We filed the mandatory CAU (Código de Autoconsumo) registration with Endesa for the 25kW self-consumption installation — a legal requirement under RD 244/2019 for all grid-connected solar systems. The Boletín Eléctrico for the complete electrical installation was submitted to the Delegación de Industria within 5 working days. The client-facing monitoring system (SolarEdge mySolarEdge app) was configured with custom alerts for daily generation below threshold, battery below 20%, and grid connection fault. The property manager was set up as a secondary user account for facility monitoring. Total commissioning-to-CAU notification time: 8 working days.

Backed by Research

Solar PV performance figures and financial incentives are backed by Spanish law and independent research. These are the facts underpinning every system we design:

1,800+ kWh/kWp annual solar yield in Málaga province

IDAE's solar radiation atlas confirms Málaga receives among the highest irradiance in Europe — enabling solar systems to generate 25–35% more energy per installed kilowatt than equivalent installations in northern Europe.

RD 244/2019 legalised and simplified solar self-consumption in Spain

Spain's Royal Decree of April 2019 abolished the 'sun tax', simplified CAU grid registration, and made surplus energy compensation available — transforming the economics of residential and commercial solar.

20–40% IRPF income tax deduction for solar installation — expires 31 December 2026

Spanish tax law allows residents to deduct 20–40% of solar installation costs from their annual income tax return, capped at €3,000/year per property. This incentive is time-limited and currently expires at the end of 2026.

Up to 50% IBI property tax reduction available in most Málaga municipalities

Municipalities across Málaga province offer a 50% reduction in annual IBI property tax for 3–5 years for properties with certified solar installations — a recurring annual saving that compounds over the life of the system.

Sotogrande luxury villas are a very specific brief: the aesthetics have to be premium and the outcome has to be invisible. Black-framed panels on a white Andalusian flat roof are a design statement. The monitoring has to work when the owner is in London, Zurich, or Dubai — not just when they're on site. And the compliance paperwork has to be watertight because these properties change hands through international sales agents who request full documentation. Every detail matters.
