The Challenge

Electricity bills for this Marbella Golden Mile villa were exceeding €450 per month despite the property sitting empty for several months each year. The 300m² villa's standing consumption — 24-hour CCTV, pool pump, climate control maintaining set temperatures year-round, and the home automation system — meant the meter was always running. The owner wanted genuine energy independence: not just a lower bill but the ability to run a luxury Marbella villa on near-zero grid electricity, with battery backup protecting the security and pool systems during coastal power outages.

The Solution

8kW solar system with 10kWh battery storage. 85% energy independence achieved for luxury coastal villa.

Technical Specifications

  • 24 x 330W monocrystalline panels

Our Installation Process

1

Site Survey & Energy Audit

Our engineer reviewed 12 months of Endesa billing data and conducted a room-by-room load survey of the villa. The south-facing pitch with less than 3% shading from surrounding trees confirmed excellent solar potential for Marbella's 1,900+ annual sunshine hours. Existing 3-phase supply capacity was verified sufficient for the hybrid inverter and battery.

2

Structural Roof Assessment

A structural survey confirmed the traditional Spanish teja árabe roof could safely support the distributed load of 24 panels (approximately 480kg). We specified coplanar aluminium rail mounting with tile-hook fixings that preserve the roof membrane without through-tile penetrations — essential for maintaining both structural integrity and the villa's insurance validity.

3

System Design & Equipment Selection

With 85% energy independence as the target, we modelled the villa's annual demand against 8kW solar generation projections (approximately 13,600 kWh/year in Marbella). The 10kWh LiFePO4 battery was sized to cover the villa's 400–500W overnight base load for 20+ hours and provide seamless blackout protection for the CCTV and pool systems.

4

Installation — 3 Days

Day 1: Panel mounting and cable routing. Day 2: Hybrid inverter and LiFePO4 battery commissioning in the dedicated electrical room. Day 3: System testing, monitoring app configuration, and client handover. All cable runs were concealed in trunking; the equipment room was ventilated and temperature-managed to protect the battery. Work was coordinated around the villa's property management schedule.

5

Grid Registration & CAU Certification

We completed all paperwork for the Endesa grid connection and CAU registration for surplus energy export under Spain's net compensation framework. The mandatory Boletín Eléctrico and full commissioning report were issued within 5 working days and filed with the Junta de Andalucía — giving the client formal documentation for insurance and property records.

Backed by Research

Solar PV performance figures and financial incentives are backed by Spanish law and independent research. These are the facts underpinning every system we design:

1,800+ kWh/kWp annual solar yield in Málaga province

IDAE's solar radiation atlas confirms Málaga receives among the highest irradiance in Europe — enabling solar systems to generate 25–35% more energy per installed kilowatt than equivalent installations in northern Europe.

RD 244/2019 legalised and simplified solar self-consumption in Spain

Spain's Royal Decree of April 2019 abolished the 'sun tax', simplified CAU grid registration, and made surplus energy compensation available — transforming the economics of residential and commercial solar.

BOE — RD 244/2019 ↗

20–40% IRPF income tax deduction for solar installation — expires 31 December 2026

Spanish tax law allows residents to deduct 20–40% of solar installation costs from their annual income tax return, capped at €3,000/year per property. This incentive is time-limited and currently expires at the end of 2026.

Agencia Tributaria (Spain Tax Authority) ↗

Up to 50% IBI property tax reduction available in most Málaga municipalities

Municipalities across Málaga province offer a 50% reduction in annual IBI property tax for 3–5 years for properties with certified solar installations — a recurring annual saving that compounds over the life of the system.

Diputación de Málaga ↗
The key design decision on the Marbella villa was the battery sizing. The overnight base load was running at 400–500W continuously from CCTV, networking, fridges, and pool filtration — a 5kWh battery is exhausted in under 10 hours at that rate. The 10kWh gives 20+ hours of overnight coverage before the grid contributes. Combined with Marbella's south-facing orientation delivering 13,600 kWh annually, this system genuinely gets the villa to 85% independence rather than the 60–65% a smaller battery would achieve. We also spec'd a Type B RCD for the battery circuit — required by REBT for safe LiFePO4 installation and often skipped by less careful installers.
