The Challenge

The second Sotogrande villa — a 380m² property on a 2,100m² plot — had already experienced a 4-hour power outage in December that disrupted a large dinner party, damaged food in the smart wine cooler, and disabled the property's security system. Energy cost reduction was secondary: the client's primary requirement was a battery backup system guaranteeing uninterrupted power for 24 hours from the moment the grid failed, regardless of solar generation. The 12kW solar component was specified to maximise self-consumption and offset battery charging costs rather than achieve grid independence in its own right.

The Solution

Premium backup power system with 20kW solar and 40kWh battery. Ensures uninterrupted power during grid outages.

Technical Specifications

  • 40 x 500W Canadian Solar HiKu panels
  • SMA Sunny Boy Storage 2.5 battery inverter
  • 40kWh LG Chem RESU battery system
  • Automatic grid disconnect switch
  • 3-day autonomy capacity

Our Installation Process

1

Critical Load Mapping & Backup Duration Planning

We mapped all circuits onto a critical/non-critical classification: security, freezer, wine cooler, networking, and guest AC were designated critical (combined 3.2kW). A managed critical load panel with smart switching was designed to shed non-critical loads during outages — keeping the battery focused on the systems the client actually needed protected.

2

Hybrid Inverter & 20kWh Battery System

A Solis 10kW three-phase hybrid inverter was installed with 20kWh LiFePO4 batteries. The backup output was wired to a dedicated critical load panel providing automatic island-mode switchover in under 20ms during grid failure. With the 12kW solar array, the battery reaches 100% charge by early afternoon on a clear day, providing effectively unlimited backup duration during good weather.

3

CAU Registration & Net Compensation

The solar installation was registered with Endesa under Spain's net compensation framework. During periods when the battery is full, surplus solar exports to the grid at OMIE market price — providing a secondary income offsetting the fixed supply charge. All documentation (Boletín Eléctrico, CAU certificate, commissioning report) was filed with the Junta de Andalucía within 10 working days.

4

Battery BMS Commissioning & Blackout Test

The Solis battery management system was configured with the critical load panel as the priority output. A full blackout simulation was conducted: grid supply was manually interrupted and the system was timed for automatic island-mode transition (measured at 16ms — well within the 20ms target for protecting the smart wine cooler's compressor). Battery depth-of-discharge was set to 10% minimum to preserve cell life. The SolarmanPV monitoring app was configured on the client's phone with a dedicated 'battery below 20%' alert. A full 24-hour battery autonomy test was run with the grid disconnected, confirming the system sustained the 3.2kW critical load for 26 continuous hours before reaching the 10% reserve threshold.

Results

100% backup coverage

Backed by Research

Solar PV performance figures and financial incentives are backed by Spanish law and independent research. These are the facts underpinning every system we design:

1,800+ kWh/kWp annual solar yield in Málaga province

IDAE's solar radiation atlas confirms Málaga receives among the highest irradiance in Europe — enabling solar systems to generate 25–35% more energy per installed kilowatt than equivalent installations in northern Europe.

RD 244/2019 legalised and simplified solar self-consumption in Spain

Spain's Royal Decree of April 2019 abolished the 'sun tax', simplified CAU grid registration, and made surplus energy compensation available — transforming the economics of residential and commercial solar.

20–40% IRPF income tax deduction for solar installation — expires 31 December 2026

Spanish tax law allows residents to deduct 20–40% of solar installation costs from their annual income tax return, capped at €3,000/year per property. This incentive is time-limited and currently expires at the end of 2026.

Agencia Tributaria (Spain Tax Authority) ↗

Up to 50% IBI property tax reduction available in most Málaga municipalities

Municipalities across Málaga province offer a 50% reduction in annual IBI property tax for 3–5 years for properties with certified solar installations — a recurring annual saving that compounds over the life of the system.
