The Challenge

The client had recently taken delivery of a new Tesla Model Y — one of the most popular electric vehicles among expat homeowners on the Costa del Sol — and was immediately confronted with the reality of EV ownership without a dedicated home charger in Spain. The nearest Supercharger is a 12-minute drive to the Estepona retail park: tolerable for a planned weekly top-up, but genuinely inconvenient for daily use. Overnight charging from the villa's standard domestic socket via the included Type 2 Mobile Connector delivered just 2.3kW — around 15km of range per hour — meaning a full 75kWh charge from empty took over 32 hours. A Tesla Wall Connector operating at 11kW on three-phase supply adds 90km of Model Y range per hour; on the single-phase supply standard across Estepona and the Costa del Sol, 7.4kW still delivers 48km of range per hour — more than enough to fully charge the Model Y overnight. The client needed a Tesla Wall Connector Estepona installation that could charge the Model Y at full single-phase capacity overnight. The challenge was not just the charger itself: Spanish domestic electrical supplies are typically 25–32A single-phase, and the consumer unit in this villa dated from 2018 with limited spare capacity. Any Tesla Wall Connector installer Málaga working on this property had to assess the existing supply, verify REBT ITC-BT-52 compliance for EV charging infrastructure, and route a dedicated 32A circuit from the main distribution board to the garage wall — approximately 16 metres of cable routing through internal trunking and the building's block structure. A socket, a Mobile Connector, and a power strip were not going to solve this.

The Solution

Tesla Wall Connector installation at a home in Estepona. The case documents the charger and electrical integration; actual charging power depends on the vehicle, supply and commissioned settings.

Our Installation Process

1

Step 1: Consumer Unit Survey and 32A Circuit Capacity Assessment

Before any Tesla Wall Connector installation in Spain can proceed, the existing electrical supply must be verified to support the additional load. We began with a full consumer unit survey at this Estepona villa: photographing the existing breaker configuration, measuring the supply head fuse rating (63A in this property — the typical maximum for a standard Spanish domestic supply), and calculating the simultaneous demand of all existing circuits. The villa's calculated peak demand was 42A — drawing on the air conditioning, kitchen appliances, hot water, and lighting simultaneously. With a 63A supply head fuse, adding a 32A Tesla Wall Connector circuit would put the theoretical maximum at 74A — above the fuse rating if everything ran simultaneously. This is where load management matters: Tesla's Wall Connector Gen 3 includes built-in Current Sensing capability. We specified the installation to include Endesa's dynamic load management configuration, which automatically reduces the Wall Connector's current draw when other household loads are high, keeping the total below the supply head fuse limit. At times of low household demand — typically between 11pm and 7am — the Wall Connector charges at full 32A/7.4kW. The client schedules overnight charging within the Tesla app, aligned to Endesa's Discriminación Horaria (time-of-use) tariff for maximum off-peak savings.

2

Step 2: 16-Metre Cable Route in Rigid PVC Conduit — REBT ITC-BT-52 Compliance

The consumer unit is located inside the villa's main hallway; the garage is at ground level, accessible via a separate entrance. The cable route from the consumer unit to the intended Wall Connector position on the garage's rear wall spanned 16 metres — running vertically through internal cavity wall trunking for 4 metres, then horizontally through a conduit chase across the front facade, and finally along the exposed garage wall in surface-mounted trunking. REBT ITC-BT-52 — Spain's specific regulation for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure — mandates that dedicated EV charging circuits use a minimum 6mm² copper cross-section for circuits up to 32A, with mechanical protection (rigid PVC conduit or equivalent) wherever the cable is exposed or buried. In Spain we use H07V-K single-core copper conductors in rigid PVC conduit (tubo de PVC rígido) — the standard Spanish installation method that provides equivalent mechanical protection to the armoured cables used in other countries. We ran 6mm² conductors throughout: this exceeds the minimum requirement and ensures negligible voltage drop over 16 metres at 32A (calculated at under 1% — well within the 3% maximum permitted). Craig, our Electrical Director, specified a separate RCD (Residual Current Device) Type B — not the standard Type AC used for most household circuits — as required by REBT ITC-BT-52 for any EV charger that has a DC component. The Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 is an AC charger and generates no DC fault current itself, but the regulation requires Type B RCD protection as a future-proofing measure. All cable routing was photographed at each stage for the Boletín Eléctrico documentation package.

Step 3: Tesla Wall Connector Mounting, Pairing and App Configuration

With the dedicated circuit in place, mounting the Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 took approximately 45 minutes. The unit mounts onto a wall bracket with four M6 fixings into solid masonry — we used Fischer SX 8mm anchors into the rendered concrete block rear wall of the garage, positioned at 1.4 metres height to allow the integrated charging cable to reach any parking position within the garage without strain. The Wall Connector's internal wiring is straightforward for a certified installer: L, N, and Earth connections to the dedicated MCB, plus the control wiring for the current sensing CT clamp installed at the consumer unit. The unit is powered, the green LED illuminates, and commissioning begins through the Tesla Owner's app. The client's Tesla account is linked to the charger via WiFi (the garage received adequate signal from the villa's router), enabling: scheduled charging — set to commence at 11pm on the Endesa off-peak tariff; maximum current adjustment — we set this to 32A, the maximum for the dedicated circuit; Power Sharing configuration — noted for future reference if a second vehicle is added; and firmware auto-update enabled. The RFID card shipped with the Wall Connector was programmed to the client's Tesla account, providing a physical backup authentication method. The full commissioning, including a test charge of the Tesla Model Y from 40% to 80% state of charge, took 2 hours — confirming 7.2kW actual charge rate (within normal tolerance of the 7.4kW nominal, accounting for vehicle-side losses).

Step 4: REBT Certification, Boletín Eléctrico and Endesa Grid Notification

In Spain, any modification to the fixed electrical installation of a property — including adding a new dedicated circuit — requires a Boletín Eléctrico (also called a Certificado de Instalación Eléctrica or CIE), issued by the authorised installer and submitted to the regional Delegación de Industria. This is not optional: without a Boletín, the installation is technically illegal, the homeowner's property insurance may be invalidated in the event of an electrical incident, and the Tesla Wall Connector manufacturer's warranty can be voided (Tesla's warranty for the Wall Connector requires installation by a qualified electrician meeting local regulatory requirements). Our Boletín documentation package for this Estepona Tesla Wall Connector installation included: single-line electrical diagram showing the new 32A/Type B RCD/MCB circuit; cable schedule with cross-section, length, and conduit type; load calculation demonstrating supply head fuse adequacy; photographic record of all cable routes, connections, and protective devices; Earth continuity test results; RCD trip time test results (Type B, 30mA test: <30ms — well within the 300ms maximum). Endesa was notified of the supply modification — a requirement under the Spanish grid connection regulations whenever additional significant load is added to a domestic supply — and the notification reference number is held on file. For any expat homeowner concerned about doing this by the book: this is what proper Tesla Wall Connector installation Spain looks like.

Specify charging against the vehicle and supply

A 7.4 kW, 11 kW or 22 kW equipment rating is not a promise of delivered power. Vehicle AC limits, phases, supply capacity and configured current determine charging. Cable sizing, earthing, RCD/DC fault protection, surge protection and documentation must follow the applicable design, REBT/ITC-BT-52 and manufacturer instructions.

Communal private-space charging has a defined notification rule

LPH article 17.5 provides prior notification for private-use charging in an individual garage space, with installation and consumption costs borne by the interested users. Shared infrastructure changes or other arrangements may require additional assessment; do not assume either universal neighbour consent or unrestricted work.

Check current incentive eligibility before budgeting

An eligible spending base is not the deduction itself. Confirm the current tax rule, dates, payment method, installation use and subsidised amounts with AEAT. Load management and solar compatibility also need model-specific checks; neither guarantees free charging or prevents every electrical trip.

The Boletín Eléctrico is something a lot of expat homeowners don't know about until they try to sell their property or make an insurance claim. In Spain, every new circuit — EV charger, pool pump, additional distribution board — must be certified. We issue it as standard, but I've seen properties where chargers were installed by handymen with no certification at all. If something goes wrong, the insurer will ask for the Boletín. If it doesn't exist, you have a problem. The Type B RCD requirement for EV chargers is also frequently skipped by installers who use a cheaper Type A — that's a non-compliance under REBT ITC-BT-52 and a safety issue.
